On February 21, in Brussels, Raivis Kronbergs, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), will participate in the EU Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries (Council) where Member States will discuss situation on the EU agricultural and food market.
In Latvia, currently, the situation remains critical in pig production sector. As compared with the end of December, in January, prices of pig meat reduced by 14,7% already. Also, in the first week of February, the price of pig meat was still reducing.
MoA is still asking the European Commission to implement the necessary emergency support measures for pig production farms in those Member States where in 2021 as compared with 2019 pig meat production level decreased and income of producers also considerable reduced.
At the Council meeting, Member States will also discuss the topic of how to strengthen coordination between green deal, the EU Common Agricultural Policy and trade policy to support the transition to sustainable food systems that would guarantee provision with food for EU inhabitants as well as provide farmers with the necessary income support.
