On Monday May 27, in Brussels, Armands Krauze, the Minister for Agriculture, will participate in the meeting of the EU Council of Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries where Member States will discuss how in future to prevent quicker and more effectively crisis situations, caused by  external factors in agriculture and food industry.

The EU Presidency has suggested drawing more attention to improvement of the EU crisis management instruments and minimization of  impact on agriculture caused by crisis. Although, the existing EU Common Agricultural Policy envisages various risk management measures, for example, Agricultural Emergency Reserve Fund EUR 450 million per year. Still, more effective ways must be found how to use this fund in response to different distortions of the market as well as to unfavorable weather conditions and impact of climate changes.

The Ministry of Agriculture considers that solving of crisis and problems, caused by urgent situations, must not be left only to the discretion of Member States – a common approach at the EU level is needed.

At the Council, Ministers of Member States will also discuss an impact of russia’s war in Ukraine on the EU agricultural market. The Minister for Agriculture, continues remainding the EU to lay dawn more stringent restrictions for imports to the EU of food and agricultural goods from russia and belarus.
