On Monday, December 9th, Minister of Agriculture Armands Krauze will participate in the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council meeting, which will be chaired for the first time by the newly appointed EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen. During the meeting, member states will share their perspectives on the future development of the EU’s agriculture and food production sectors.
The council will also decide on fishing opportunities for member state fishermen for 2025 and 2026 in non-EU waters—specifically in the North Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) area of the Atlantic Ocean. The Ministry of Agriculture hopes the decision will be made in 2024, enabling Latvian fishermen to start fishing in these waters as early as January 2025.
