From November 22 to December 2, an online mission of the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research is ongoing in Latvia, to assist the authorities, implementing the project “Enhancement of sustainable land soil resource management in agriculture” of the Norwegian financial instrument, in preparation of the further implementation plan of the project.

During the week and half of experience sharing, two experts from NIBIO, with a relevant experience in the area, are sharing their experience in soil research issues and provide recommendations to the project partners. During the mission, online interviews are held with experts from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment and Regional Development, the Plant Protection Service, the Latvian Forest Science Institute SILAVA, the University of Latvia and the State Land Service. Taking these interviews as basis, the initial assessment by NIBIO on the management of soil resources in Latvia will be prepared.

During the experience sharing mission, there will be a workshop held, where institutions interested in the project results, will be acquainted with the project implementation plan, activities and expected results.

Currently ongoing mission is the first of the three planned such visits during implementation of the project. During the visits, NIBIO will get acquainted with the course of project implementation and provide support to the partners in the development of methodology and classification systems of soil research. In conclusion of the project, an assessment report will be presented, incorporating recommendations for improvement of Latvia’s soil information system.

The planned project budget is EUR 1,83 million, including the Norway grant EUR 1,56 million and EUR 0,27 million - the national co-financing.
